Community Partners: Let Me Run
Let Me Run Central Virginia Region is part of the national Let Me Run nonprofit organization, which strives to teach boys valuable wellness lessons centered around mental health. Let Me Run uses the power of running as a safe outlet for boys to express themselves, learn how to respect one another, and develop healthy emotional traits. As part of their Fall and Spring seasons, each team of up to 14 boys are taught by two trained coaches for seven weeks. These volunteer coaches instruct boys from 3rd-8th grade about appropriate running technique, sportsmanship, and encourage self-confidence. At the end of each season, there is an exciting 5k race to celebrate the team connection and growth of the boys.
While this organization is based in North Carolina, the process to set up a team program in one’s area is simple. As elementary schools and similar organizations commonly arrange for local teams, the necessary funding for this program is usually easier to find. Otherwise, local scholarships or fundraising efforts can be constructed to support the boys. Next, coordination with Janie Cook, the Director of Expansion for this region, is required to establish the logistics for the program. College students, like Madison House volunteers, and other community volunteers make fantastic coaches for the teams, and their responsibilities consist of attending practices, training the boys, and either participating in or supporting the team at the 5k race. There are few other essential resources needed, as the foundational goal of this program is for the boys to have fun, be supported by their coaches and community, and leave the program having learned healthy wellness practices.
