Following a nationwide search, the Madison House Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Stephanie Carter has been appointed the organization’s next Executive Director.
Carter brings extensive experience in educational leadership and has served as the Director of the Charlottesville Albemarle Technical Education Center since 2019. Her deep professional ties to the greater Charlottesville community and passion for service will help further advance Madison House’s mission to connect UVA students with meaningful volunteer initiatives and learning opportunities that address critical needs in the community, while also promoting students’ personal growth and leadership development.
“We are thrilled to welcome Stephanie as our new Executive Director,” says Sherri Moore, co-chair of the Madison House Board of Directors and associate professor at UVA’s McIntire School of Commerce. “With her background in transformational leadership, building community partnerships, and overseeing organizational operations, she is exactly the leader we were hoping to find in order to advance our work in community engaged learning and maximize our impact in the Charlottesville area and beyond.”
Carter was drawn to the position because of the opportunity to work with student leaders and collaborate with community partners for the public good. “Having worked in the Albemarle and Charlottesville City school systems for more than 12 years, I have always been impressed with the services Madison House provides to our local schools,” says Carter. “It is invigorating to join a team that works to align some of the best and brightest college students in our country to unique service opportunities and learning experiences that help meet local community needs.”
Carter recognizes that being a volunteer is about much more than simply donating time to a cause. “At the core of volunteer service is the human connection and having formative experiences that may not have been possible otherwise,” says Carter. She explains that by cultivating strong, meaningful relationships and mutually collaborative partnerships, Madison House can help address urgent needs and amplify community voices.
“Charlottesville is rich in diversity and filled with people who want to engage actively with the community. These values are so ingrained in our local ethos, and I have witnessed many student leaders changing the world before my eyes, says Carter. “As an institution, Madison House is a microcosm of these values, and I am excited to explore how we can expand Madison House’s reach. The possibilities are endless.”
Carter succeeds Interim Executive Director Emily Wampler, former Executive Director of the PB&J Fund and Madison House board member. Carter will begin as Executive Director in early June.
