What is Madison House?

Madison House (MH) serves as the volunteer center for students at the University of Virginia. We coordinate volunteers, develop leaders, build community partnerships and promote lifelong volunteer service. Madison House organizes service programs to address the needs of the community as well as the educational and personal growth objectives of students.

We accomplish our mission by facilitating relationships between Community Partners (CPs), local organizations and institutions offering volunteering opportunities, and our students. Head Program Directors (HPDs) are student leaders who oversee a number of programs within one of our program tracks and report directly to the Madison House Programs Team. Program Directors (PDs) are student leaders who report to an HPD, coordinate with one specific CP, and organize and arrange volunteering for a specific Madison House program.

What are the Different Departments within Madison House?

The Madison House Community Engagement and Programs Team supports our student leaders by acting as advisors, providing leadership development programming, and formulating new CP partnerships.

The Madison House Operations Team handles the logistics that keep our organization and programs running, including finances, transportation, and management of in-house resources.

The Madison House Advancement and Communication Team represent our organization to outside groups and interested stakeholders, and secure and promote the donations and grants that fund our programs.

What are the Different Volunteering Program Tracks?

Animals and Environmental Services Programs promote environmental stewardship and animal welfare. Examples of volunteer duties include assisting with horseback riding lessons, cultivating a community garden, and restoring local parks and trails.

Education and Youth Services Programs expand the reach of our schools and child care centers with tutoring help, mentoring, and extra support in an overwhelmed system. Volunteers can engage in academic assistance, after-school programming, or extracurricular activities with students from local elementary, middle, and high schools.

Human Services Programs support the access of Charlottesville's emotional, psychological, and financial services to our most vulnerable communities. Some possible volunteering programs include Adopt-A-Grandparent, CASH, HELP Line, Housing Improvement, and Recreational Therapy.

Medical Services Programs provide regional providers with extra support in order to improve the quality of care for patients throughout Charlottesville and the surrounding areas. Students can volunteer within the UVA Health System, at Martha Jefferson Hospital, with smaller local providers, or support the Blue Ridge Health District.
